• Engine Management

Because of the timing of this website, I have already had one engine management system and have since changed it. I will list here what I started with and what I am installing now, along with the reasons for the change.

When I originally started collecting parts for my build I didn't know as much as I do now, as far as the differences of units that are on the market.

The First round: AEM Plug "n" Play Engine management.

  • AEM 30-1040 EMS Plug "n" Play ECU (OBDI)
  • OBD-0 to OBD-I Jumper Harness
  • AEM C2DI Coil Driver
  • Honda CBR600f4i Coils

The AEM EMS is a stand alone engine management system that has allot features. It lets you program the amount of fuel that gets delivered to your engine at different RPM's and Loads. It also has a few nifty features like a 2-step revlimiter and traction control.

I'm running what is called a Direct Fire Coil On Plug ignition system. Basically what that means is that there is a coil for every sparkplug that fires once per engine cycle. This gives the coil the maximum amount of time to charge and deliver the most amount of energy to the sparkplug possible.

The AEM Coil Driver takes the individual coil signals from the ECU (AEM EMS) and delivers the charge to the respective Coil. This type of ignition setup cannot be done with the stock ECU or the "chipped" management systems like Hondata, Neptune, Chrome or Uberdata due to the lack of outputs on the stock ECU.

I kept the stock distributor just for the Cam and Crank sensors that are located inside of it. Other than that, it is just taking up space.

The Problems

Due to the short comings of the AEM EMS as for signal filtering and EMI protection and the added "noise" generated by the coil driver + Ignition Coil leads, at higher RPM's I was getting some sync errors leading to misfire.

In the long run I ended up hurting my engine block, that lead to a complete rebuild....

The Second Coming...

Round 2: MoTec + M&W

  • MoTeC M400
  • Custom Built Mill Spec Harness and Bulkheads
  • M&W Ignition Pro 14
  • T1 Racing Hall effect crank/cam pickup w/modified Golden Eagle cam gear
  • Honda CBR600f4i Coils

MoTeC is one of the most world renowned brands of engine management systems on the market today. They are used in all forms of automotive and marine racing. They have also been around for a very very long time with a reputation for the highest quality (and price).

The features of the M400 and it's new "Version 3" software are quite extensive and would take a book to explain. I'm actually going to take a class on the new software on 10/14-15/06. If you want to learn more about MoTeC, you can visit their website at www.motec.com or you can read the MoTeC forum at www.efi101.com/forum/
