As far back as I can remember, I have always had a love for cars. From my friends fathers 1956 Chevy Nomads to the Lamborghini Countach.
Back in 1992 I was 16yrs. old. I was young, dumb and full of ideas. The car that I really wanted to get, that had a reasonable price was the Honda CRX. But due to financial reason and lack of support from my parents I was never able to get one (They were still pretty new back then :P)
What I got instead was an old 1979 Ford truck… What a bucket!
By the time I was 18 I had to move out of my parent’s house due to a little sibling rivalry with my sister. She was 19 and a single mother trying to go to college… it’s was an easy decision for my father. It sounds kind of cold but I’m glad at times that it happened. It made me very self reliant and independent.
It also made me broke as hell. I was taking some college courses at Long Beach City College and working full time at a warehouse in Downey. That didn’t last too long, the college was killing me financially because it cut into my work time (overtime) I needed to work at least 8 hours of overtime a week to make rent at the time… No hope for my CRX L
A year later I moved in with a friend and got a job at Sushi bar in Long Beach. This is when I really started to learn about Hondas and what you could do to them.
My friend/roommate belonged to a racing crew at the time (Wicked Racing) and drove a 1991 Civic Si. It sported a PYR (Peter Yen) ported & milled head, bored out throttle body (Peters dad use to make them for us at his work), DC headers, 2 ¼” exhaust, K&N filter on a short ram and a Clay Smith ground cam. And back in 1995 it was running 14.5-14.7 at the Terminal Island Raceway( T.I. for short) N/A.
Back then we had a set schedule of work, go to peters house, work on cars and then hit the street races on weeknights and TI on the weekends.
About 6 months of working at the sushi bar, I started dating one of the new girls. Not long after that she was pregnant. I didn’t have a clue on what I was going to do, I was still young, and I was scared. So I tried to do the right thing…. I married her.
During this time I got fired from the Sushi Bar, not my fault, but we had a crooked cashier that hated my guts because I didn’t like the way she treated people and I didn’t stand for her shit. She later became the assistant manager and thus my demise. I heard that se actually made it up to manager then got caught stealing from the company and got sent to jail HAHAHAHAHA.
Any way, I took up a temp job at a printing shop in Los Angeles. After a few months I got hired on permanently. We had a beautiful little girl on 3/27/97.
We moved into our own apartment and my Wife couldn’t work, money was very tight and work was turning into a slave shop.
I worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week for about 8-9 months. It was very hard manual labor. The only thing that kept me sane were my daydreams. You would be surprised how much they help to get though a 12-hour day of doing the same thing over and over and over and over again. I think the thing I dreamed about the most was building the baddest CRX to hit asphalt.
It was during this time that one of the girls I used to work with at the sushi bar contacted me to sell her 1988 Civic DX hatchback. She wanted $1100 for it… I couldn’t pass it up.
The Civic was a pale blue with a messed up driver side fender from someone backing out of their driveway. Before long I took it to my friend Steph’s shop and I pulled the stock engine out and had one of his friends weld in some engine mounts for a B16A1. I dropped in the B16 and with a little guidance from Steph, I wired it all up my self .I did the basic mods to it, thinking of it as a beater/racer I could dive until I could get a CRX.
I kept the Civic and raced it for a while before I lost it to the impound yard for some legal reasons… (Note to self, street racing is bad!).
I got divorced and moved in with another friend of mine who was an engineer at the company that I work at till this day. With child support and rent, it pushed back my dreams for a CRX.
Soon after I my roommate got me a job at his company doing computer related work (computers have always been another one my hobbies). The money was good and my rent was relatively low. So in 2001 I finally bought a 1991 Crx Si.
It had a stock engine and exhaust and a decent suspension (KYB AGX with H&R springs) So I kept it stock until I could do it up right.
Time to do some research…. I found a really good Honda forum with a wealth of information on it, www.honda-tech.com. I spent Countless hours researching parts, theories and setups that other people have used. I came up with a plan and started collecting parts…. For 2 years hahaha……
